Our year 6 pupils have been fortunate to participate in a project with Mr Sharma who represents the University College of Estate Management on an outreach programme which was funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering. Mr Sharma is a senior manager at the Greater London Authority and we were very grateful to the time he gave up to spend with our pupils.
During the afternoon Mr Sharma introduced the children to ‘Priest Holes’ https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/houses-buildings/places-to-find-priest-holes and set the pupils a challenge! After looking at some technical drawings (drawn by an architect) the children were given a basic structure (an empty box) along with a range of materials and most importantly an object to hide! The children, working in teams, had to collaborate to design a secret room in which to hide their object. There were some very creative ‘secret rooms’ and the afternoon was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
‘It was such a great experience and great fun – some of us even made some decoys for the other teams!’
‘It gave me an insight into engineering and made me more interested than I had been before. Although it may not be my future career I now know more about it’.
A very big thank you to Mr Sharma for such an enriching afternoon.
